Interesting.... in Hawaii there was a small subgroup of people who called slippers thongs. Pretty sure they weren't from Australia. Over here they are called "slippas" and while I used to avoid them once I decided to use them they chaffed me between my toes. Now I have calluses so my slippas don't bother me. The usual cheap version is called rubba slippas which was the usual instrument of torment for parents wishing to punish their kids.
